Awareness Days can be a great opportunity to think about how to keep yourself healthy and learn about all sorts of issues from around the world. Below are some of the Awareness Days taking place in 2012.

FEBRUARY
4rd February is Unicef Day for Change. Every year, Unicef chooses a different country and theme to learn about. This year looks at how children in Uganda live, and how Unicef's Education Through Sport programme uses sports and play to help Ugandan children be healthier and happier.
24th February is National Wear Red Day. People all over the country get involved in raising money and awareness for the British Heart Foundation, going red for heart. This means they wear red to school or work, have fun raising money and learn about how important your heart is!

MARCH
14th March is No Smoking Day. This year people are encouraged to take the leap and give up smoking! Events take place all over the country to teach about how smoking affects health.
22nd March is World Water Day. Millions of people all over the world don't have enough water. World Water Day looks at who is affected and how we can all help. The theme this year is 'the world is thirsty because we are hungry' - looking at how important water is to growing food, keeping farms and staying alive.

APRIL
22nd April is Earth Day. Earth Day focuses on the environment. On this day, people all over the world pledge to do one thing to help save the planet.

MAY
1st May is World Asthma Day. It aims to raise awareness and improve care. You could think about how smoking might affect people who have asthma.
1st - 7th May is Asthma Awareness Week in the UK.
18th May is Fruity Friday! Go bananas by wearing yellow! The aim is to raise money for the World Cancer Research Fund and learn about how eating well and keeping fit can help you be healthy for life!
21st - 25th May is Walk to School Week. The aim is to get children and parents to make walking to school part of their routine. It's a great way to start the day and stay active!

JUNE
5th June is World Environment Day. This year they are asking does being green include you? It's important that people all over the world are environmentally friendly - at work, at school and at home. This will help everyone all over the world to have enough food and water.
11th - 17th June is Oxfam Water Week in Scotland. Schools can learn about global water issues and how to make a difference.

JULY
2nd - 6th July is Oxfam Water Week in England and Wales. Schools can learn about global water issues and how to make a difference.
21st - 29th July is Love Parks Week. Parks can help us feel less stressed and also help keep the environment stable. They are also great places to attend activities or get regular exercise. Love Parks Week is holding events all over the country to encourage people to make use of their local parks!

SEPTEMBER
9th September is International FASD Day. FASD is a disorder that can cause physical, mental or psychological problems in people who were exposed to alcohol before they were born.
21st September is the International Day of Peace. World Peace Day hopes to promote peace around the world and remind people of the human cost of war. They also work for a 24 hour global ceasefire to give hope to people living in conflict and let people who need it receive food, medicine and supplies. 
29th September is World Heart Day. People all over the world are encouraged to take ten steps to a healthier life, including eating 5 fruits and vegetables a day and keeping active.

OCTOBER
5th October is Jeans for Genes day. People organise events and wear jeans to school or work to raise money for children with genetic disorders.
5th October is also World Smile Day! The aim is for people all over the world to do small acts of kindness and help other people to smile. You'll put a smile on our own face, too!
15th October is Global Handwashing Day. Some children don't have clean toilets or anywhere to wash their hands. This causes millions of children to become ill every year. Wherever you live, the message is still important. Global Handwashing Day aims to spread the message that clean hands save lives!

NOVEMBER
11th November is Armistice Day. At 11am, we observe a 2 minute silence to mark the moment that World War One ended and to remember the people who have died in wars and conflicts around the world.
11th November is also Remembrance Sunday this year. People all over the country hold services and ceremonies to remember those who have died in conflict. Many also show they are commemorating by wearing poppies. A 2 minute silence is held at 11am.
16th November is the International Day for Tolerance. Children around the world can learn about other cultures and ways of life and think about how ro respect one another.
19th November is World Toilet Day. 2.6 billion people - that's nearly half the world's population - don't have access to safe and clean toilets. Thousands of children every day become ill because of poor sanitation. A lack of sanitation is the biggest cause of illness in the world and kills 1.8 million people a year. Events are organised on this day to raise awareness and help bring an end to illness, poverty and death from sanitation-related diseases around the world.
20th November is Universal Children's Day. It celebrates the UN Declaration of the Rights of the Child and is a day to think about children who may not have these rights yet. All children have the right to an education, a childhood, to be healthy, to be heard and to be treated fairly.
