The British Liver Trust have released a new report, 'Tackling alcohol misuse: Should abstinence be our preferred approach?'
The charity argues that abstinence may not always be the best approach for helping people into recovery, and that each individual should have support and treatment suited to their needs, rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach to recovery.
The British Liver Trust says that it's important that those needing help are treated as individuals, rather than seeing addiction as having one solution.
Different approaches should also be taken for those with mild, moderate or severe problems, they say.
70% of alcohol-related deaths are due to liver disease. The British Liver Trust highlighted that GPs and other health workers should all screen for alcohol abuse and look for signs of liver disease.
Overall, the report stressed that alcohol-related harm is reaching crisis point in the UK, and that politicians should not be afraid to act to save lives.
