Alcohol is harmful to the body.
Alcohol is carried around the body via the bloodstream. It can affect the organs in different ways:
Liver: Regular drinking can damage the liver by making it work too hard in trying to process the alcohol or by causing fat to build up in the liver.
Kidneys and bladder: Alcohol makes the kidneys produce more urine than is needed. A person will then become dehydrated.
Stomach: Alcohol irritates the stomach. Alcohol will cause thestomach to make too much acid, which can then inflame the stomach lining. Symptoms include an upset stomach, vomiting, pain and bleeding.
Fertility: Alcohol is linked with a lowered sperm count in men, and decreased fertility in women.
Drinking alcohol can increase the risk of some cancers, including liver, bowel, breast and mouth cancers.
