Drink Spiking

Drink spiking is the adding of mind-altering substances, such as drugs or alcohol, to a drink without knowledge or consent.

Any drink - alcoholic or non-alcoholic - can be spiked.

Drink spiking doesn't just happen to women, or in busy clubs - it can happen to anyone, anywhere.

Drinks aren't just spiked by strangers - it could be someone you know.

Stay safe by:

  • never leaving your drink unattended
  • keeping an eye on your friends' drinks
  • not accepting drinks from a stranger
  • drinking from bottles rather than glasses

If you are unsure about your drink, leave it - don't take the risk.

Drink spiking can be done for amusement, to be malicious, to carry out physical or sexual assault or to steal from the victim.

Drink spiking is against the law. Anyone caught spiking drinks can be imprisoned for up to 10 years. If other crimes - like sexual assault, robbery or rape - are involved, the penalty can be much higher.

'What is drink spiking?' is available to buy as part of our KS3/4 alcohol leaflets pack and KS3/4 alcohol posters pack. Visit our Literature store to find out more.
