Alcohol and Men

Alcohol can cause health issues for men.

As well as the alcohol-related health problems that affect both men and women, alcohol can cause men specific health problems:

Infertility and impotence: Alcohol can lower sperm counts and testosterone levels.

Weight gain: Alcohol won't necessarily cause a beer belly, but drinks popular with men - including beer and cider - are high in calories, leading to weight gain all over the body!

Alcohol affects both women's and men's perceptions and behaviour. They may become more aggressive or violent, or may be less able to defend themselves, unable to judge if a situation is risky and are more vulnerable to assault.

Men generally process alcohol faster than women, as they generally weigh more and have more tissue to absorb alcohol.

The government recommends that men should not drink more than 3-4 units a day, and 21 units per week. Men should have several alcohol-free days per week.

'Alcohol and Men' is available to buy as part of our KS3/4 alcohol leaflets pack and KS3/4 alcohol posters pack. Visit our Literature store to find out more.
