Alcohol poisoning

Alcohol is a poison - too much can kill.

Drinking large amounts of alcohol, especially over a short period of time, can lead to alcohol poisoning.

When a person drinks too much, too quickly, the body can't process the alcohol fast enough. The amount of alcohol in the blood stream - your blood alcohol concentration - becomes dangerously high.

If your BAC is too high, the alcohol starts to affect your heart, your breathing and your gag reflex. People with alcohol poisoning often choke on their own vomit.

Someone with alcohol poisoning may become pale and cold, be confused, have seizures, vomit, develop hypothermia, become dehydrated or lose consciousness.

Drinking too much can also affect your judgment and behaviour, leaving you at greater risk of accidents, violence or injury.

Alcohol poisoning can result in brain damage or death.

If you suspect someone you know has alcohol poisoning, do not leave them alone. Seek medical help immediately.

'Alcohol Poisoning' is available to buy as part of our KS3/4 alcohol leaflets pack and KS3/4 alcohol posters pack. Visit our Literature store to find out more.
