Units

Alcohol is measured in units.

One unit of alcohol is 10ml of pure alcohol. This is approximately the amount of alcohol an adult can process in an hour (although this depends on the adult's gender, health, weight, age and metabolism).

Alcohol contents vary from drink to drink - so two different types of lager, for example, can contain different numbers of units.

To calculate the number of units in a drink:

Strength (ABV) x volume (ml) ÷ 1000 = units

Unit calculators are available online: Drinkaware, NHS, BBC Newsbeat

The government advises that men should drink no more than 3-4 units of alcohol a day, and no more than 21 units a week. They advise that women should drink no more than 2-3 units a day, and no more than 14 units a week. The government also advises that men and women should have at least a few alcohol free days a week.
