Cannabis

Cannabis is a depressant drug and one of the most commonly used illegal drugs in the world.

Cannabis is usually smoked in cigarette papers with or without tobacco (known as a 'spliff'), it can also be baked in 'hash' cakes or drunk in tea. Cannabis is available in 3 forms - dried leaves (marijuana or grass); solid resin (hash); a liquid from the resin (hash oil).

Cannabis is considered to be harmless because it's a plant, but this is not the case, especially if it's been mixed with other drugs.

Risks include: anxiety; panic attacks; poor balance. Long-term risks include: chest infections and cancers of lung, throat and mouth, links with schizophrenia.

Cannabis is a Class B drug. Possession can carry a maximum sentence of 5 years. Supplying can carry a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison. Both punishments can also carry an unlimited fine.
