Ephedrine is a stimulant which speeds up the heart and central nervous system.
It comes from the plant 'Ephedra Sinensis'. Known also as 'Ma Hueng' and used by Chinese herbalists.
Small amounts of Ephedrine are used in 'over the counter' cold remedies which relaxes the airways making it easier to breathe.
Although Ephedrine can make a person feel: alert; happy; more energetic; it can also cause a number of reactions, such as: the skin to feel sensitive; an increased heart rate; anxiety.
If Ephedrine is taken long-term it can cause increased blood pressure and heart rate which can lead to heart attacks and strokes.
Currently it is legal to possess small amounts of Ephedrine. However it has been proposed to make it a prescription only drug which would make non-prescription Ephedrine illegal.
