Solvents or Inhalants are often found around the home and can include: spray paints, glue, aerosols including deodrant, hairspray or air freshners, lighter refills.
Solvents give off fumes which are inhaled from a plastic bag, known as 'bagging'; a rag or cloth soaked with the chemical, known as 'huffing'; or directly from the original container known as 'snuffing' or 'snorting'.
Aerosols/gas products can be squirted directly to the back of the throat and the amount is difficult to control. This is extremely dangerous! It can cause the throat to swell and the user to stop breathing and die.
Health risks include: damage to all internal organs; damage to the central nervous system; nose bleeds; powerful hallucinations. It is known that users have a high risk of dying the first time they use solvents.
Solvent abuse is very dangerous! Household products come with a warning against the danger of human consumption.
Solvent misuse is not illegal. However it is illegal for shopkeepers to sell solvents to anyone under the age of 18 if it is suspected the solvents are going to be used for sniffing.
