Speed

Speed is the street name for a range of amphetamines which are manmade stimulant drugs. They are used to speed up the mind and body.

They are popular with 'clubbers' because it gives them energy. Speed generally comes as a white or off white powder and sold in 'wraps' and is either dabbed onto the gums, snorted, rolled up in a cigarette paper and swallowed, mixed in drinks or injected.

Amphetimines are highly addictive - the more taken the more is needed to get the same 'buzz'.

Regular users inject Speed to get the effects quickly. Effects can make the user feel: alert; energetic and talkative and can last up to 6 hours which is followed by a slow 'comedown'.

Long term use can include: paranoia; anxiety; heart problems; psychosis. Injecting Speed can cause: damage to veins; risk of HIV or Aids and ulcers.

Speed is extremely dangerous mixed with alcohol or anti-depressants. This combination can be fatal!

Speed is a Class B drug. Possession carries a maximum prison sentence of 5 years. Supplying carries a maximum prison sentence of 14 years. However, if prepared for injection it becomes a Class A drug and the sentences are more severe. All punishments can also carry an unlimited fine.
