There are 2 types of steroids: Corticosteroids and Anabolic Steroids.
Corticosteroids are natural substances produced by the body which help to control different functions, such as: how the body uses fats, proteins and carbohydrates; regulating the balance of salt and water in the body and regulating the immune system.
Corticosteroids are also manufactured by drug companies to treat various medical conditions, such as: auto-immune diseases; some cancers; and reduce allergic reactions to certain chemotherapy drugs.
There are little or no side effects - but this depends on dosage and length of time Corticosteroids are used.
Anabolic Steroids are completely different! They are manmade drugs usually in pills or capsules, but they can also be injected.
They are used to build up body weight and increase muscle growth. However, they can cause aggresive and competitive behaviour. Anabolic Steroids can also cause violent and sexually abusive behaviour - this is known as 'Roid Rage'.
Men who regularly take Anabolic Steroids risk side effects, such as: liver & kidney damage; raised blood pressure; shrunken testicles. Women who regularly take Anabolic Steroids also risk side effects, such as: deepened voice; more body hair; shrunken breasts.
Users can become psychologically dependent and suffer withdrawal symptoms.
Anabolic Steroids are prescription only drugs. Possessing them for personal use is not illegal; however counterfeit steroids readily available on the internet are Class C drugs. The maximum sentence for possession or supplying anabolic steroids is 14 years in prison and/or an unlimited fine.
Drug testing has outlawed the use of anabolic steroids in sport.
