In the UK the Misuse of Drugs Act is the main piece of legislation covering the law on controlled (also known as illegal) drugs. Drugs are divided into 3 classifications. These are Class A: Class B: Class C. Each classification carries a different punishment for possession or supplying (dealing).

- possess a controlled substance unlawfully
- possess a controlled substance with intent to supply
- supply or offer to supply a controlled drug - even if it is given away free
- allow a house, flat or office to be used by people taking drugs.
Possession: is having one or more illegal drugs with the intention of distributing, selling or using.
Supplying: is being in possession of one or more illegal drugs with the intention of supplying them to other people. Supplying doesn't just apply to dealers! If it's suspected that the person found with illegal drugs is going to share them with friends, this is considered to be supplying.
- Class A Possession: up to 7 years in prison Supplying: up to life in prison
- Class B Possession: up to 5 years in prison Supplying: up to 14 years in prison
- Class C Possession: up to 2 years in prison Supplying: up to 14 years in prison
All classifications can carry an unlimited fine.
