Tranquilisers

Tranquilisers are manmade prescription drugs to treat anxiety, epilepsy and sleeplessness.

They are controlled under the 'Medicines Act' and are legal only if prescribed by a doctor.

Tranquilisers are usually swallowed as pills but they can be crushed into a powder and injected or dissolved.

They should never be mixed with other depressant drugs such as alcohol or heroin.

There are several side effects: lethargy; forgetfulness; loss of co-ordination. The effects begin after 10-15 minutes and can last up to 6 hours.

Tranquilisers are often taken by addicts to bring them 'down' after taking stimulants such as cocaine. They can also be a replacement for heroin.

Risks include: overdose if taken with alcohol; addiction; accidents as the central nervous system slows down reactions.

Tranquilisers are prescription only drugs. Without a prescription they are illegal and become a Class C drug. Possession can carry a maximum prison sentence of 2 years. Supplying can carry a maximum sentence of 14 years. Both punishments can also carry an unlimited fine.
