Gambling and the Family

People with gambling problems focus their attention on gambling and ignore other responsibilities.

Gambling addiction affects the whole family. Relationships may suffer as friends and family react in different ways to the problem and related financial issues, feeling shock, anger, betrayal, shame or fear.

Problem gamblers may use gambling as a form of escapism from a bad situation at home, or to cope with unhappiness or stress.

Compulsive gamblers think they are in control of the situation and that they have found the winning system.

Children living with a problem gambler can feel guilty, angry or depressed. They can also feel that they are to blame, that they cannot trust the parent who breaks promises or feel out of control and helpless. 

Children of problem gamblers may end up having to take on more responsibilities, such as caring for siblings, as they try to support their parent.

Problem gambling can cause severe financial worries and the breakdown of relationships.
