Smoking and Women

Coronary heart disease is becoming more common in women around the world. Smoking is one of the major risk factors for heart disease.

Women are at risk of the same smoking-related cancers as men including cancers of the lung, pancreas, larynx, kidney, mouth and bladder.

Smoking also increases the risk of infertility and pelvic inflammatory disease (which can contribute to ectopic pregnancies). The risk of miscarriage and cervical cancer is also increased.

Teenage girls who smoke increase their risk of early menopause. Smokers also have a greater fat accumulation in their mid-section which raises the chances of developing diabetes.

Quitting smoking greatly increases your chances of a healthier and longer life.

Quit smoking and:

  • within 72 hours breathing becomes easier
  • after 2 to 12 weeks, circulation improves
  • within 3-9 months, lung efficiency improves by up to 10%
