- In the 1980s 10% of compulsive gamblers were women, but by the early 1990s figure was 50%.
- 70% of female gamblers are trying to avoid feelings, pain or trauma and one in five women who are compulsive gamblers will consider suicide.
- Gambling and substance abuse are closely linked. Women often use drugs or drink excessively while gambling and may, at time, substitute one for the other.
- As with substance abuse, compulsive gamblers need to gamble for longer periods of time with larger amounts of money to produce the same feeling that was first experienced in order.

It could happen to you
My whole family gambled. When I was young my dad took me to the race track every week. Gambling was my only break. Eventually it broke me. I collapsed in exhaustion trying to keep the secret.
For Years my friends and I played bingo very week. When I was laid off I started to play more often. The kids were grown and I was bored.
It was an easy way to get extra money to treat the kids. Soon I was buying scratch cards every day. I was spending the little money we had.
Think of the risks and consider the consequences!
