What is second-hand smoke?
Second hand smoke is other people's tobacco smoke.
Facts and effects of second-hand smoke
- Breathing second hand smoke is sometimes called passive smoking.
- 85% of second hand smoke is invisible and odourless.
- Non-smokers who breathe in second hand smoke are at risk of the same diseases as smokers including cancers, heart disease and problems with breathing.
The law
To protect people from the dangers of second hand smoke, on 1st July 2007, all public places became smoke free.
This means that it is be against the law to smoke inside any building used by the public, including cafes, restaurants, shopping centres and even bus shelters.
Anyone who smokes in a smoke free place could face a fine of £50.
Think of the risks and consider the consequences!
